Golu is the festive display of dolls and figurines in South India during the autumn festive season, particularly around the multiday Navaratri (Dussehra, Dasara) festival of Hinduism. These displays are typically thematic, narrating a legend from a Hindu text to court life, weddings, everyday scenes, miniature kitchen utensils, anything a little girl would have played with. They are also known as Kolu, Gombe Habba, Bommai Kolu or Bommala Koluvu.
There are also golu dolls, which signify the importance of marriage, baby shower,Birthday Party and religious processions.
The nine-day festival of Navratri is incomplete without golu dolls, sundal and Carnatic music. The exhibition hall at Pondicherry Sri Vedhapureeswarar Temple Hall offers the perfect festive sight golu dolls neatly stacked on Three steps, Lord Vishnu’s dasavataram, Lord Muruga’s six avatars, sorga vasal (gateway to heaven) are hard to miss. There are also golu dolls, which signify the importance of marriage, baby shower and religious processions.
